Throughout the course you'll explore how to make sound decisions, manage groups, and adapt your leadership style to changing environmental conditions while maintaining an enjoyable and safe experience for everyone.

Working in small groups, you'll receive personalised coaching and constructive feedback as you develop the confidence to lead journeys in moderate conditions.

Sea Kayak Leader Training - Duncan Greene

Who is this course for?


This course is designed for experienced sea kayakers who are confident paddling in moderate sea conditions and are looking to develop the leadership skills required to safely lead others on coastal journeys.

It is ideal for paddlers who:

  • Have well-developed personal sea kayaking skills and are comfortable in wind, waves and tidal waters.

  • Want to build confidence in planning and leading journeys in moderate conditions.

  • Are preparing for a sea kayak leadership assessment or working towards a leadership qualification.

  • Already lead informally within a club or group and want to improve their judgement, decision making and group management.

  • Wish to develop practical leadership skills through coaching, feedback and real-world scenarios in a supportive learning environment.

Participants should have experience of journeying in moderate sea conditions, be comfortable performing assisted and self-rescues, and have a good understanding of navigation, weather and tidal planning. This course focuses on developing leadership rather than personal paddling skills, although individual coaching will be provided where appropriate to support your progression.

Our Menai Strait & Swellies Guided Play Days are designed for experienced paddlers who want to make the most of this iconic tidal playground. Benefit from expert local knowledge as we guide you to the best features at the right stages of the tide, helping you surf tidal waves, master eddy lines, and refine your paddling with practical coaching throughout the day. Full safety cover is provided, allowing you to focus on developing your skills and enjoying the experience.

Participants should have previous experience paddling in tidal environments, including tide races, or be comfortable on Grade 3 white water.

To ensure a safe, high-quality coaching experience, sessions are limited to a maximum ratio of 1 coach to 4 paddlers.

Join us for the BCAB Sea Kayak Leader Training & Assessment over 3 days for an intensive and rewarding course led by expert coach Duncan Greene - £335pp (Course fees will also apply)
Set against the world-class, dynamic coastal environment of Anglesey, this course is designed to develop and assess your ability to lead groups of paddlers safely and effectively in moderate tidal waters.

What to Expect
During this combined training and assessment course, we will cover:

Leadership & Group Management: Strategies for leading diverse groups in moderate tidal environments, maximizing both safety and enjoyment.
Incident Management & Rescues: Effective problem-solving, towing techniques, and rescuing swimmers or incapacitated paddlers in dynamic water.
Navigation & Tidal Planning: Practical, on-the-water navigation, utilizing tidal streams, weather forecasts, and route planning.
Personal Paddling Skills: Refining your boat handling, launching, landing, and dynamic water skills to ensure you are a confident and capable leader.

Prerequisites (BCAB Guidelines)
To get the most out of this course and be eligible for assessment, participants should ideally have:

Substantial experience paddling in moderate tidal water environments.

Valid First Aid certificate (recognized by BCAB).

Development Sea Kayaking Course - Anglesey

This course is designed for kayakers who want to continue their personal development, building their skills, confidence and ability in more challenging conditions.

The course is student-led and tailored to the needs of the group. On the morning of Day 1, we will discuss what each participant would like to develop during the two days. From there, we will build a program around the group's individual goals, experience and aspirations, with the aim of making the most of the time on the water.

These courses are designed as part of a longer-term development program, with the same group of kayakers attending 3–4 sessions over a 12-month period. Working with the same group allows us to build on previous sessions, develop skills progressively and support everyone as they learn and improve together.

The aim is to create a supportive environment where participants can challenge themselves, develop their personal skills and gain greater confidence and understanding on the water.

To ensure you get the most from this course participants should meet the following requirements:

Recent Experience: At least 10 days of sea kayaking in the past 2 years, including some time in intro moderate water conditions (up to Force 4 winds, 2 knots tide, and crossings up to 2 nautical miles).

Fitness: Good core strength and general fitness—able to sustain 2–3 days of moderate aerobic activity and several hours of paddling daily.

Skills & Confidence: Comfortable paddling in intro moderate conditions.
